I've Been a Dedicated Windows User, but Here Are 3 Reasons I'm Not Returning After Switching to a MacBook

For decades, I was captivated by PCs, enduring their occasional abuse. I've wrestled with Windows 10 updates that wreaked havoc on my laptops, leading to audio driver issues, WiFi troubles, and remote printing glitches. I've also experienced the frustration of using power-hungry laptops that left me tethered to an outlet, fearing the "It's time to plug in your laptop" message.

Yet, due to my Windows upbringing and familiarity with the operating system, I stubbornly resisted giving MacBooks a chance. As a casual gamer, I stuck with PCs like the Lenovo Legion 5, which allowed me to enjoy my favorite titles on Steam.

While MacBooks may not be gaming powerhouses (though Apple is working on a new "game mode" feature), the number of games compatible with Apple's custom processors in recent MacBooks is limited. Nevertheless, for my productivity workflow, I'm committed to my 14-inch MacBook Pro. Here are three reasons why.

As a laptop reviewer, I've witnessed rigorous battery tests conducted on both Windows laptops and MacBooks. These tests involved continuous WiFi usage until the laptops ran out of power. Invariably, MacBooks outlasted PCs by hours.

In my personal experience, PCs typically endure around 10 hours in these tests, while MacBooks exceed that figure by four to five hours. The 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Max processor, in particular, stands out as the most power-efficient consumer laptop, offering an impressive 19 hours of battery life on a single charge. I've never seen PCs come close to such performance.

Why do MacBooks offer superior battery life? The answer lies in Apple's decision to abandon Intel processors in 2020, as Intel was holding them back. Apple introduced its own custom chips, starting with the M1 chip, and I was amazed by their energy efficiency. Subsequent chip upgrades (M2, M2 Pro, and M2 Max) have only made MacBooks better.

Compared to my Windows laptops, my MacBook Pro is significantly faster. Simple tasks like closing multiple tabs in Google Chrome are lightning quick. According to Geekbench results (measuring processor performance), the M2 Pro boasts an astonishing multi-core score of 14,209. In my experience with the LG Gram 17, featuring an Intel Core i7-1360P chip, the tab closure takes a second or two. To find a Windows laptop that rivals the M2 Pro's performance, you'd likely need to upgrade to a costly Intel Core i9 chip, sacrificing battery life in the process.

Apple has managed to deliver powerful performance in its laptops without compromising energy efficiency, a challenge that Windows laptops often face.

I can't stop admiring the new animated screensavers offered by macOS Sonoma for my lock screen.

Additionally, the new update allows you to share your password with trusted contacts. You no longer need to jot down sensitive credentials on a Post-It note if you want to share a password, such as your Netflix account, with your partner. You can add them to your list of trusted contacts, granting them seamless access to the password. This is something you can't do on Windows.

SharePlay, though not a new feature in Sonoma, remains one of my favorite macOS perks. It allows you to watch Apple TV shows with another iDevice owner via the FaceTime app. Speaking of FaceTime, Sonoma introduced new gestures like "thumbs up" and "rock on" that trigger fun effects like fireworks and balloons.

Let's not forget how incredible the speakers on my 14-inch MacBook Pro sound – it's as if Apple captured the sonic essence of angels and integrated it into the six-speaker sound system.

Of course, there are some aspects of Windows I miss, like Paint and the convenient Snap Layouts feature in Windows 11 that simplifies managing multiple windows. I'm still adjusting to the absence of the CTRL key on my keyboard, replaced by the COMMAND key for copy and paste, and using the "Control" key for right-clicking feels unfamiliar. However, the idea of going back to a Windows laptop is unimaginable, thanks to my 14-inch MacBook Pro's remarkable battery life.
