A Drone Barrage on Moscow Escalates Ukraine's Push to Take the War to Russia

A massive drone attack on Moscow, the largest since the start of the war, shut down the city's four airports and part of a major highway, filling the sky with black smoke from a burning oil refinery. The assault, which appeared to be the biggest wave of strikes on the city, came as Ukraine escalates its efforts to bring the war home to Russians.

The attack, which occurred on Thursday, did not immediately report any deaths, but it is likely to fuel fears among Russians that the Kremlin's ability to shield society from the war's impacts is weakening. This could mark a new stage in the conflict, which has now surpassed the duration of World War I.

Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil refineries and processing facilities with drone attacks, leading to fuel shortages and rationing at gas stations in dozens of regions. The country has also launched strikes aimed at cutting off supply lines to Crimea, the peninsula Russia annexed in 2014.

In a voice memo, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that if Ukraine suffers, Moscow will also face consequences, saying, "If Ukraine burns, then your Moscow will burn as well." The Russian economy is already feeling the strain of the war, which has been ongoing for over four years.
