Chris Richards Returns to Training for US Men's National Team Ahead of World Cup Opener

US Men's National Team defender Chris Richards has taken a significant step towards recovery, increasing hopes of a return to the team ahead of the FIFA World Cup. Richards participated fully in training on Monday as the USMNT began their World Cup training camp in Irvine, California. The veteran defender had been sidelined from the team's recent friendlies against Senegal and Germany, sparking concerns over his potential availability for the upcoming tournament.

According to US manager Mauricio Pochettino, Monday marked Richards' first training session with the team. Pochettino expressed his satisfaction with the team's overall readiness, stating that it is good to have nearly everyone available for selection ahead of the upcoming match against Paraguay. Richards has been out of action since suffering a serious ankle injury, including torn ligaments, while playing for his club, Crystal Palace, on May 17.

Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards suffered an injury in the latter stages of a 2-2 Premier League draw against Brentford, resulting in his absence from the team's final two matches of the season.
The injury also affected his participation in the UEFA Conference League Final on May 27, where he was included in the squad but did not take part in the 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, a match that marked Crystal Palace's third trophy lift in 16 months with Richards on the team.
Richards' unavailability for the US Men's National Team led to opportunities for other center backs, with all four players on the roster earning playing time over the past eight days.
Captain Tim Ream accumulated 117 minutes across the two friendlies, while Miles Robinson played 107 minutes, and both Auston Trusty and Mark McKenzie each contributed 73 minutes.

Mauricio Pochettino has not officially confirmed that Richards will be available for the upcoming Group D opener against Paraguay on Friday, but the 26-year-old's return to training is a positive development. Richards' recovery timeline suggests that he may need around 22 days, or slightly more than three weeks, to reach full practice. This return estimate aligns more closely with the predictions of concerned parties, rather than the more optimistic forecasts. Pochettino has expressed legitimate concerns over how Richards was included in the roster for the European Conference League final by his former team, despite apparently not being ready for practice until June 8. This decision has raised questions about whether the team was taking a risk by playing him or misrepresenting his health status in order to have him participate in the trophy ceremony. A similar situation occurred last summer during the Club World Cup, involving players Campbell and Reyna.

Borussia Dortmund had initially included them in their roster, but in reality, Reyna saw very limited action, featuring in only one game, while Campbell did not play at all. It would be prudent to exercise caution and have him sit out the first game. Perhaps, if the team is ahead by two goals, he could be given 20 minutes of playing time to ensure his ankle is fully recovered. His availability will be crucial in the knockout stages.

A thorough health and fitness assessment is necessary to determine whether he can withstand the demands of the competition. From a sporting perspective, the first group game is significant, as it presents a winnable opportunity against a "medium" opponent, Paraguay. Securing a positive result in this game, followed by a match against the relatively "easy" opponent, Australia, is essential. The team aims to avoid a situation where they are chasing points against a Turkish team that defeated them last year. Instead, they hope to have already clinched their position. The recent performance has shown that, unless Pochettino takes some risks, the team may concede one or two goals to any opponent they face, even with their regular lineup, excluding Richards.

In a bid to strengthen their defense, two possible solutions have emerged. One approach involves fielding a makeshift lineup featuring known effective defenders in a back three formation, with players such as Jedi and Trusty potentially joining Freeman. An alternative strategy would be to expedite the return of Richards to the lineup. It has become imperative to take action, as conceding two or more goals per game is an unsustainable trend.
