Lionel Messi Breaks Yet Another World Cup Record with Seven Goals and Counting

Lionel Messi has broken multiple World Cup records during this summer's tournament. He scored a hat-trick against Algeria, breaking or equalling five records, and then surpassed Miroslav Klose's record to become the World Cup top goalscorer with 18 goals against Austria.

Messi continued his record-breaking streak, scoring a crucial free kick against Jordan to secure a 3-1 victory. This goal increased his tally to 19 goals across five World Cups and made him the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup games.

The 39-year-old Inter Miami CF star has scored in all three games at this tournament and in four consecutive games at the 2022 World Cup. In Qatar, he scored in six of seven games, with the only exception being the match against Poland.

Messi has now surpassed the record set by Brazilian forward Jairzinho, who scored in all six games at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. As Messi continues to set new benchmarks at the 2026 World Cup, he aims to lead his country to back-to-back titles.
