Nico Schlotterbeck Sidelined: Germany Defender to Miss Rest of World Cup Due to Ankle Injury

Germany's central defender Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the remainder of the World Cup due to an ankle ligament injury sustained during the team's 2-1 victory over the Ivory Coast on Saturday. A scan revealed a torn ligament in his left ankle, ruling him out for several months.

Schlotterbeck, a key player for Borussia Dortmund, was replaced by Antonio Rudiger at halftime. Coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed his disappointment, stating that Schlotterbeck's absence will be felt, particularly in his build-up play. However, Nagelsmann noted that the team remains well-positioned in central defence with Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Waldemar Anton, and Malick Thiaw.

Germany, having secured top spot in their group, will face Ecuador in their final group match on Thursday. The team has already advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in 12 years. The 2026 World Cup, featuring 48 national teams, is being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11th to July 19th.
