Three People Killed in Grand Canyon National Park Amid Scorching Extreme Heat Conditions

A heat wave has claimed the lives of three hikers in Grand Canyon National Park, with temperatures in the shade reaching 109 degrees. The victims, aged 67, 68, and 72, were found dead on the South Kaibab and North Kaibab trails after succumbing to suspected heat-related illnesses.

Park rangers and emergency personnel responded to the incidents on June 12 and June 16, prompting warnings to visitors to avoid the Inner Canyon during peak daytime hours. The National Park Service has cautioned that hiking in the Grand Canyon can be challenging, especially during the summer months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat-related illnesses occur when the body is unable to cool itself, putting older people, young children, and those with chronic medical conditions at higher risk. Heat is the leading weather-related killer in the US, with climate change exacerbating the dangers.
