Tottenham Agree Deal to Sign Mateus Fernandes as West Ham Midfielder Set to Make Record-Breaking Move

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes for a club record transfer fee of €98.6 million. The 21-year-old talent will join Spurs when the summer transfer window opens, according to Sky Sports. This deal surpasses Tottenham's previous transfer record of €65m paid for RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons.

The fee is the second-highest transfer fee West Ham have received for one of their players, behind the €116.6m Arsenal paid for Declan Rice in 2023. Fernandes had been linked with moves to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks.

Tottenham have already spent €60m to sign Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke, as well as signing Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers. Fernandes joined West Ham less than 12 months ago for €44m and quickly established himself as a key player, despite the club's relegation. His market value has risen from €8m to €50m in two years. If the deal is completed, Fernandes will become the third most expensive Portuguese player of all time in terms of cumulative transfer fees, with a total of €157.6m.
