UFC Event at White House Faces Storm Threat Peaking at the Worst Possible Moment
Severe thunderstorms are forecast to hit Washington D.C. on Sunday, coinciding with a major mixed martial arts event at the White House. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts the highest chance of thunderstorms at 8 p.m. ET, the scheduled start time for the event, which also marks President Donald Trump's 80th birthday.
According to NWS forecaster Kyle Pallozzi, the main threat window for severe thunderstorms is between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., with a 30% chance of rain at 5 p.m., peaking at 70% at 8 p.m., and dropping to 30% by midnight. Pallozzi notes that while a thunderstorm may pass through, it is unlikely to linger.
The NWS also warns of a 30% chance of damaging winds of at least 50 mph, a 2% chance of tornadoes, and a 5% chance of hail. The poor weather on Friday prompted the UFC to postpone a press conference, but clear skies on Saturday allowed the ceremonial weigh-in to proceed without incident. The event on Sunday is part of a celebration marking the 250th anniversary of America's founding, featuring a seven-fight card.
