Houston ICE Killing Puts Spotlight on Alarming Rise in Immigration Arrests Across the US

A fatal shooting by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Houston has highlighted an increase in immigration arrests across the US. The killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican construction worker and father of three, occurred as thousands are being arrested daily.

Immigration enforcement has intensified in cities like Chicago, Las Vegas, and small suburbs outside Milwaukee and San Antonio, with arrests doubling in the last week of June. Community organizer Getsy Hernandez noted that these operations have been carried out "behind the scenes."

Mr. Salgado Araujo, who had lived in the US for over 30 years without legal status, was not the initial target of the agents. His death has sparked protests, calls for independent investigations from local leaders and Latino civil rights groups, and promises of legal action from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
