Rebecca Bennett Tackles Tom Kean Jr.'s Struggle with Depression in Delicate Balance

Kean's response to the detention facility controversy was seen as inadequate by many in the district, with some critics arguing that he failed to take a strong enough stance against the proposal. The issue has become a rallying cry for Bennett, who has sought to capitalize on Kean's perceived inaction to argue that he is out of touch with the needs and concerns of his constituents. As the campaign enters its final stretch, Bennett is likely to continue to press Kean on his record, including his handling of the detention facility issue, in an effort to persuade voters that she is the better choice to represent the district. With Kean's return to the campaign trail, the stage is set for a intense and closely watched contest that could have significant implications for the balance of power in Congress. The National Republican Congressional Committee has already begun to invest heavily in the race, airing ads that seek to portray Bennett as a radical liberal who is unfit to represent the district. But Bennett's campaign remains confident, citing internal polling that shows the race to be highly competitive and arguing that Kean's lengthy absence and recent health issues have only added to the sense of uncertainty and unease among voters.

Kean introduced legislation to create a grant program to help towns hosting detention facilities, and his office sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in April, urging him to consider local concerns. However, the town had already expressed dissatisfaction with Kean's response, stating in February that he had not engaged sufficiently to provide the advocacy residents deserved.

In contrast, Bennett has visited Roxbury five times since January and addressed a council meeting on the detention center issue. The controversy ultimately subsided after the Department of Homeland Security changed its strategy under Secretary Mullin and decided to offload properties purchased for detention centers, including the one in Roxbury.

Kean's consultant, Neely, defended his work on the issue, saying it dated back to December 2025 and that he had been working behind the scenes to achieve the desired outcome. Following Kean's revelation of his depression diagnosis and hospitalization, he received support from Republican colleagues and expressions of sympathy from Democrats.

New Jersey GOP State Chair Christine Hanlon criticized Bennett for her previous comments about Kean, calling on her to apologize. However, Bryan, a spokesperson for Bennett, dismissed these attempts to shift the focus, saying the diagnosis would not change their campaign strategy, which remains focused on Kean's voting record.

The news coverage of Kean's disappearance and diagnosis has ensured that voters are aware of the issue, and many will likely consider it when making their decision. As Malinowski noted, while voters may have sympathy for Kean, they will also have questions about his ability to represent them in Congress, given the circumstances.
