1 killed in Midland, Texas, shooting; suspect also dead after intense standoff
A shooting and standoff in Midland, Texas, has left at least one person dead and others injured, authorities confirmed. The incident began on Friday morning in the 4600 block of West Wall Street, where police responded to reports of an active shooter.
Midland spokesperson Stewart Doreen stated that police heard shots coming from a building and worked to clear the area, with armored units and partner law enforcement agencies assisting at the scene. The standoff was later resolved, and the shooter was confirmed dead via footage from a robot and drone, according to Mayor Lori Blong.
There are 11 known victims, with at least one person dead at the scene. Multiple people were sent to hospitals, and Midland Memorial Hospital received nine of the victims. As of 1 p.m. CT, five had been discharged, while the remaining four patients were either in surgery or recovery.
FBI Director Kash Patel deployed agents to the scene to assist Midland police, and the public was asked to avoid the area. The city is in western Texas, part of the Permian Basin, and the shooting occurred about 4 miles southwest of Midland Memorial Hospital.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott praised the response from law enforcement and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families. The incident is still under investigation, and it is unclear whether it is related to a separate incident on June 10, in which a man fired at an officer during a traffic stop.
