Jeffries Blasts 'Skyrocketing' Fuel Costs and Gets an Awkward On-Air Reminder

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was confronted over high gas prices under the Biden administration while criticizing President Donald Trump's handling of the Iran conflict. Jeffries stated that Trump's "reckless war of choice" has significantly impacted American people, particularly with regard to rising gas prices.

During an appearance on "Good Day New York," Jeffries discussed Trump's peace deal with Iran, saying it has led to "skyrocketing gas prices" in an environment where the cost of living is already high. However, co-host Rosanna Scotto pointed out that former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden also faced high gas prices during their terms.

Scotto noted that gas prices exceeded $5 per gallon under the Biden administration, with the national average reaching a record high of $5.02 per gallon in June 2022. At the time, Democrats attributed the price surge to the aftermath of the COVID pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, labeling it "Putin's price hike."

The Trump administration's conflict with Iran also led to a surge in gas prices, which peaked at over $4.50 per gallon. However, prices have declined in recent weeks as negotiations with Iran continue. The issue of high gas prices remains a contentious topic, with politicians from both parties seeking to assign blame and propose solutions.
