Austria and Algeria Secure Knockout Spots in Thrilling Six-Goal Draw with Dramatic Finish

Algeria and Austria played to a thrilling 3-3 draw, with both teams scoring in stoppage time, to advance from Group J into the FIFA World Cup Round of 32. This marks Austria's first group stage qualification since the 1954 finals.

The match began with a cautious approach from both sides, as a draw would be enough to send them through to the knockouts. However, Austria's David Alaba broke the deadlock just minutes after the first hydration break, finding Marko Arnautovic with a precise pass.

Algeria responded with Rafik Belghali flashing a shot wide and Fares Chaïbi rattling the post. Belghali eventually levelled the score on the verge of halftime with a stunning goal, beating two Austrian defenders before smashing the ball into the net.

Austria regained the lead through Marcel Sabitzer, but Algeria quickly drew level again when Houssem Aouar found Riyad Mahrez unmarked at the back post. The game seemed to slow down with both sides content to see out the remaining 30 minutes.

However, the match erupted in stoppage time, with Mahrez firing Algeria ahead in the 93rd minute, only for Sasa Kalajdzic to equalize with the last touch of the game. The draw sees Austria progress in second place, while Algeria advances as one of the top-eight third-place teams.

Austria will face Spain in Los Angeles, while Algeria will travel to Vancouver to meet Switzerland. Riyad Mahrez was named the standout player of the match.
