Barcelona Launch Swoop for Lucas Herrington as Colorado Rapids Reject Bid for Australian World Cup Sensation

Barcelona have had a bid rejected by Colorado Rapids for 18-year-old Australian international Lucas Herrington. The centre-back, who made his Socceroos debut in March, has attracted attention after impressing in the A-League and MLS.

A move for Herrington could be historic, with any deal expected to exceed €20 million, surpassing the current record of €17 million paid by Leicester City for Harry Souttar. Socceroos coach Tony Popovic praised Herrington, saying "he can be really good" and "is doing so well" at just 18.

Herrington's current market value is €4.5 million, but this is expected to rise significantly after the World Cup. Barcelona are aware that an impressive performance could impact his transfer fee. The Rapids have protected themselves by buying out a 20% sell-on clause inserted by Herrington's former club Brisbane Roar for €560,000, allowing them to keep the entirety of the transfer fee.

Despite the buzz around Herrington, caution is needed, with examples of Australian wonderkids like Nestory Irankunda failing to live up to expectations after moving to European clubs. Irankunda, once billed as a generational talent, has yet to build on his early promise after joining Bayern Munich in 2024. Herrington will be eager to prove he can be an exception.
