Czech Republic Boss Koubek Confident His Side Were Closer to Victory Than South Africa

Czech Republic manager Miroslav Koubek believes his team was closer to victory than South Africa after their 1-1 draw in the World Cup Group A match. The Czechs took an early lead with Michal Sadilek's goal but failed to capitalize on their advantage, allowing South Africa to equalize with a late penalty.

Koubek expressed disappointment over the result, citing his team's missed chances to secure a win. "We were not able to score a second goal, which would have probably ended the match," he said. The Czech Republic had several scoring opportunities, while South Africa had limited chances, mostly from distance.

Koubek disagreed with South Africa's manager, Hugo Broos, who claimed the Czechs only created danger from set-pieces. The Czech Republic manager acknowledged his team's strong first-half performance but disputed Broos' assertion that South Africa had numerous chances.

The penalty awarded to South Africa appeared generous, with Pavel Sulc attempting to get his arms out of the way while blocking a shot. Koubek accepted the referee's decision, calling it "unfortunate" for his team.

The Czech Republic will face Mexico in their final group game on Wednesday, while South Africa meets South Korea. The 2026 World Cup, featuring 48 national teams, is being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11th to July 19th.
