Deadly Earthquakes Collapse Hotel Housing Over 100 Recently Deported Venezuelans

A pair of powerful earthquakes devastated parts of Venezuela on June 24, leaving widespread destruction in their wake. A hotel housing over 100 deported Venezuelans, who had arrived from the US earlier that day, collapsed during the disaster. The repatriation flight, carrying 146 people, including several families, had landed in Venezuela around 10 am.

Family members of those affected reported that the group was sent to the Hotel Santuario La Llanada. Rosvelis Boscan Chacin, 47, was among those who checked into the hotel, and his daughter said he had called her at 3 pm, asking for her address, but was told he would not be taken to her home that day. Boscan Chacin was described as the "pillar of our family" and a father to seven children.

Another family, including Johana Pineda, her husband Richard Pereira, and their 7-year-old son Richi, were also on the flight. While Pineda and her son survived the hotel collapse, Pereira died. The family had been living in Tennessee since 2023 and were seeking asylum before being detained and placed on a repatriation flight.

The earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck the coast of Venezuela, causing buildings to collapse in the capital, Caracas. At least 1,719 people have died, and 5,034 have been injured, with responders still searching for those trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing, with many families still waiting for news of their loved ones.
