Donald Trump Reveals Reflecting Pool Vandalism: Here's What We Know About the Incident
The Reflecting Pool on the National Mall has been experiencing algae blooms for nearly two weeks, and its newly applied blue paint is peeling off. Experts attribute the algae issue to natural causes. However, President Donald Trump claims that the problem is the result of vandalism, stating that those responsible will be held accountable.
On June 19, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, alleging that vandals had poured a chemical into the pool to damage it. He claimed that many of the alleged vandals had been arrested the following day. Trump described the incident as "a true affront to both Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln" and said that the perpetrators were "sick, deranged people."
One person arrested in connection to the incident is David Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist, who was charged with misdemeanor destruction of government property. Hearn denies vandalizing the pool, saying he only reached into the water and grabbed a piece of flapping material.
US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stated that anyone found to be vandalizing the Reflecting Pool will face the criminal justice system. A 17-year-old was also issued a citation for allegedly taking a piece of paint from the pool.
Despite Trump's claims of vandalism, historical records show that algae blooms have been a recurring issue in the Reflecting Pool for decades. The pool has experienced algae problems after every reopening since 1922, including after a $34 million renovation in 2012.
