Donald Trump Settles Lawsuit With Himself, Dodges $100 Million Audit

In a contentious settlement, President Donald Trump and his family have gained immunity from tax audits that could have cost them $100 million. The agreement, which was authored by acting attorney Todd Blanche, who also serves as Trump's personal attorney, shields them from potential tax liability.

The development comes after the Department of Justice agreed to create a $1.8 billion fund that would have benefited Trump's allies. However, following widespread criticism, including from Republican lawmakers, Blanche announced that the fund would not move forward. Despite this, the tax deal remains in place.

The settlement is the latest twist in a long-running saga that began in 1929, when the US Supreme Court ruled that department heads are the "President's alter ego" in the case of Myers v. US. More recently, Trump sued the IRS and Department of Treasury for $10 billion over the leak of his tax returns by a former contractor.

A series of lawsuits have been filed challenging the legitimacy of the settlement and the creation of the $1.8 billion fund. Two police officers who defended the US Capitol on January 6 have called the fund "the most brazen act of presidential corruption this century," while 35 former federal judges have asked a Miami federal judge to reopen Trump's case against the IRS.

In the latest development, a judge in Virginia has blocked the fund indefinitely, giving the government a week to sign a sworn statement stating that the fund will not go forward. The case continues to unfold, with further updates expected.
