Eloy Room Makes History with 15 Shots Saved, Leads Curaçao to Historic World Cup Draw

Curaçao secured their first-ever World Cup point in a 0-0 draw against Ecuador, thanks to an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Eloy Room. The Miami FC player made 15 saves to keep a clean sheet, the most shots on target faced by a goalkeeper at a World Cup on record while maintaining a shutout. This feat surpasses the record since data was first recorded in the 1966 World Cup.

Room's impressive display comes on the back of Curaçao's 7-1 loss to Germany in their opening match. Despite the heavy defeat, the team showed glimpses of quality, and against Ecuador, they had opportunities to win with a bit of luck. However, it was Room's incredible goalkeeping that ultimately earned them a hard-fought point.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper has a notable pedigree, having won the Dutch Cup with Vitesse Arnhem in 2017, the Eredivisie with PSV in 2018, and the MLS Cup with Columbus Crew in 2020 and 2023. Room's current form in the USL Championship has seen him record four clean sheets in nine games, but none as significant as Saturday's achievement.
