Elye Wahi Arrested for Alleged Match Fixing on Eve of World Cup, Ivory Coast Star Embroiled in Controversy
Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi has been arrested in connection with alleged match-fixing offences. The 23-year-old made his World Cup debut in a 1-0 win over Ecuador on Sunday.
An investigation is underway to determine whether Wahi deliberately earned a yellow card while playing for Nice against Metz on May 17th. He was taken into custody by French police on May 29th, following a match where he scored twice in a 4-1 win over Saint-Etienne.
According to the Marseille public prosecutor's office, Wahi was released after being interviewed, and the investigation into organised fraud, sports corruption, and money laundering continues. The prosecutor's office confirmed the football player is not a member of the French national team participating in the World Cup.
