Gavin Newsom Reveals Trump's Department of Justice is Investigating Him and His Wife
California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused the Trump administration of launching a politically motivated investigation into him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Newsom claims the probe is an act of retribution because he is considering a presidential run.
The governor's office stated that federal agents have issued subpoenas and conducted interviews with individuals connected to Newsom and his wife, including former employees. Although the couple has not received subpoenas, the federal government has recently investigated Newsom's inner circle, resulting in his former chief of staff pleading guilty to diverting campaign funds and making false statements.
The governor's office alleged that the White House pressured investigators to shift their focus after an initial probe into a settlement with the company Activision did not yield results. Newsom's wife's film production company and her California Partners Project, which promotes gender equity, are also being examined. The project has received around $5.1 million in donations since 2020 from various donors, including foundations and Silicon Valley Bank.
Newsom views the investigation as part of President Trump's efforts to target his political rivals. The two have a long-standing feud, which escalated last year when Trump deployed the California National Guard to oversee immigration enforcement in Los Angeles. Newsom has warned that Trump poses a threat to democracy and has called for a showdown with the president, saying "Mr. President, come after me. I am not going anywhere."
