Iraq Suffer Defeat to Norway But Coach Arnold Remains Optimistic About Team's Prospects

Iraq coach Graham Arnold has urged his players to remain optimistic despite a 4-1 defeat to Norway in their World Cup opener. Arnold reminded the team that they have two more chances to secure a victory that could propel them into the knockout rounds.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring for Norway in the 29th minute, and although Aymen Hussein briefly equalized, Haaland restored Norway's lead before halftime. Leo Ostigard added a third goal in the 76th minute, and Hussein's late own goal completed the scoring.

Arnold expressed encouragement with Iraq's performance, noting that they applied good pressure on Norway. However, he acknowledged that mistakes against top-level players will always be punished. The Australian coach identified Norway's second goal as a turning point, saying it had a significant mental impact on the players.

Despite the defeat, Arnold believes Iraq remain in contention to reach the knockout stage. With the best third-placed teams also able to advance, he emphasized that there is no reason to panic. Arnold praised Hussein's contribution, highlighting his energy and goal-scoring performance despite an injury-hit season.

Looking ahead to their next match against France, Arnold called on supporters to continue backing the team. The 2026 World Cup, featuring 48 national teams, is currently underway in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with 16 modern stadiums hosting the tournament.
