James Sands Returns to New York City Football Club After Signing Contract Extension with NYCFC

New York City FC has signed James Sands to a contract extension, securing the player's services through the 2029-30 MLS season with an option for 2030-31. Sands returns to the club after a loan stint with German side St. Pauli, where he made 35 appearances and scored one goal before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

NYCFC Sporting Director Todd Dunivant expressed his excitement about Sands' return, citing the player's importance to the club's history and his valuable European experience. Sands, 25, originally joined St. Pauli in the 2024-25 season but will now focus on contributing to NYCFC's core roster.

Sands, who was NYCFC's first homegrown signing in 2017, has made 143 appearances for the club, scoring one goal and adding five assists in all competitions. He played a key role in the club's MLS Cup win in 2021 and the Campeones Cup in 2022. Sands has expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the club, where he has a strong connection with the fans.
