Lionel Messi Equals Miroslav Klose's World Cup Goal Tally - But Will He or Kylian Mbappé Break the All-Time Record?

Lionel Messi has equalled Miroslav Klose's World Cup goalscoring record, scoring a hattrick against Algeria in a 3-0 win. The 38-year-old Inter Miami CF star has now scored 16 goals across six World Cups, achieving this feat in 27 games. Klose, the legendary German striker, had reached the record in 24 appearances.

Messi's goals have also made him the youngest and oldest goalscorer in Argentina's World Cup history, with this achievement coming in his 200th cap for the country. Klose, who retired after winning the 2014 World Cup, had scored five goals in both the 2002 and 2006 tournaments, finishing as top goalscorer in the latter.

The all-time World Cup goalscoring chart sees Ronaldo rank third with 15 goals in 19 appearances, followed by Gerd Müller with 13 goals in 14 games. Just Fontaine, who played in only one World Cup in 1958, scored 13 goals in just six matches.

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé has moved closer to the record, scoring twice against Senegal to take his tally to 14 goals. The Frenchman, 11 years younger than Messi, now holds the record for the most goals for his country. Messi's position at the top of the goalscoring chart is under threat, with Mbappé poised to challenge his record in the future.
