Mexico vs Ecuador Round of 32 Match Delayed at the World Cup
A thunderstorm in Mexico City delayed the start of the round of 32 match between Mexico and Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday night. Dark clouds gathered three hours before kickoff, with a torrential downpour and thunderstorm hitting two hours later. With 40 minutes to go before the scheduled 9 p.m. ET start, the stadium screens announced the delay. The public address system instructed fans to "continue the party, but stay calm and stay in your seats." The match is now set to kick off at 8 p.m. local time. According to FIFA's protocol for inclement weather, play must be suspended for at least 30 minutes in such conditions. The delay was announced just as both teams were about to begin warm-ups.
