Michelle Obama Can't Escape Abuse Nearly a Decade After Leaving the White House

Michelle Obama, the first African American woman to serve as first lady, has faced another attack, this time at a White House event hosted by President Donald Trump to mark America's 250th birthday. UFC fighter Josh Hokit yelled, "Michelle Obama is a man! Am I right, America?" during a post-bout interview with Joe Rogan, perpetuating a debunked far-right conspiracy theory.

Dana White, CEO of UFC, responded to Hokit's remark, stating, "I'm completely against saying nasty and false things about people's families." White has defended free speech but expressed disdain for such comments. Hokit has previously targeted WNBA star Brittney Griner, and it is unlikely he will face punishment.

The Obamas have long faced racist tropes and online abuse, with attacks coming from various levels, including a mayor in Washington and a West Virginia county employee. Earlier this year, President Trump shared an AI-generated meme depicting the Obamas as apes, which was later removed by the White House.

Michelle Obama has spoken about the impact of these attacks, saying, "The shards that cut me the deepest were the ones that intended to cut." She has also discussed how her time as first lady influenced her fashion and style choices, and how she has found confidence and freedom since leaving the White House.

Unlike most first ladies, Obama continues to face intense scrutiny, with a strong approval rating of 66% among all voters and 87% among Democrats, according to Marist polling. Her approval rating surpasses that of President Trump, who currently stands at 39%.
