Migrants in the US Should Secure Permanent Status or Leave, According to Department of Homeland Security Chief

US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has urged migrants on temporary protected status to seek permanent residence or return to their home countries. Mullin's remarks follow a split Supreme Court decision allowing the administration to strip hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants of their humanitarian status, which protects them from deportation.

Mullin stated that the US would provide assistance, including a plane ticket and $2,100, to help those who choose to return to their countries. The temporary protected status was initially granted to Haitians after the 2010 earthquake and to Syrians after their country's civil war began in 2012.

However, the prospect of large-scale deportations faces opposition, with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressing concerns that it would not be safe for Haitians to return. DeWine argued that the removal of Haitian workers would hurt the Ohio economy, particularly the healthcare industry, which relies on them to care for elderly patients.

The presence of Haitians in Ohio has contributed to economic growth in some areas, with many working in healthcare and other essential services. The Supreme Court's decision has been criticized, with some arguing that the administration's actions may be racially biased, although the court's conservative majority found this argument unlikely to succeed.
