The Great American State Fair Kicks Off Amidst Power Outages and Empty Booths

The Great American State Fair is underway at the National Mall to commemorate the United States' 250th birthday. However, the event has been marred by several issues, including power outages and a lack of representation from at least 10 states and territories that declined to participate.

These states, including Connecticut, Oregon, and Alaska, cited the high cost of sending staff to the 16-day event as their reason for not attending. As a result, their booths were left empty, featuring only backdrops and chairs.

In contrast, other states made a significant effort to celebrate the semiquincentennial. The Texas booth allowed visitors to take photos with a replica of the Alamo and play with an interactive display, while the Nevada booth was themed around Las Vegas. California's booth offered attendees the chance to enter a raffle for a free vacation.

Some attendees expressed surprise at the states that chose not to participate. William Connor, a 49-year-old from Maryland, said, "Celebrating 250 years only happens once, so they kind of missed out." Despite Massachusetts not sending staff, a retired teacher named Donna volunteered at her state's booth, bringing maple syrup and kids' coloring books to share with visitors.

The event has also been plagued by technical issues, including a generator problem that forced the Ferris wheel to shut down for two hours. Ongoing electrical problems caused the entire selection of ice cream to melt, and some food options were unavailable during lunch. A few attractions, including West Virginia's driving simulator, were also out of service due to air conditioning issues.

Despite these challenges, visitors made the most of their time at the fair, enjoying interactive exhibits and a pop-up Budweiser bar. Michelle Catan, who traveled from New York with her husband, said, "I love going to each of these states and seeing what they have. We're very blessed to live in this country." The fair closed several hours early on Friday due to rain, giving attendees less time to explore the event.
