Murky Reflecting Pool Draws Tourists, But Not For Reasons Trump Wanted

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool remains marred by algae, despite the Interior Department's claim that the water was "crystal clear" over a day ago. National Park Service workers have been tirelessly attempting to clean the pool, which underwent a $14.65 million repaint, but the "American flag blue" paint is peeling and the water is still discolored.

The pool's condition has become a draw for tourists, with many stopping to take photos of the blooming algae. A pair of protesters marched alongside the pool, holding a "Team Algae" sign, highlighting the seemingly ineffective cleanup efforts. Workers have been pumping out the algae into drains, but the problem persists, with green spots and white blobs visible throughout the pool.

The Department of the Interior has deployed a hydrogen peroxide treatment and "nanobubble" ozone technology to address the issue. According to the department, all reopenings of the Reflecting Pool have been plagued by algae blooms, and vacuuming up the dead algae would take a couple of days. The problems have arisen despite President Donald Trump's praise for the renovations, which he touted as part of his "Make America Beautiful" initiative.

The renovations, which included a new lining, were expected to last for 50 to 100 years, but the pool's condition has deteriorated rapidly. The National Park Service had paid $1.74 million to install a "nanobubble" system to prevent algae growth, but the issue persists. Workers are expected to continue their efforts to clear up the pool ahead of the July 4th and America 250 celebrations.
