Nick Woltemade Heading for Newcastle Exit - What Went Wrong for the Germany Star and His Potential Next Destination

Newcastle United's Nick Woltemade is set to leave the club in the summer, less than a year after his record-breaking transfer from VFB Stuttgart. The 24-year-old German forward is currently with the national team for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Woltemade's €75 million move to Newcastle broke the club's transfer record, surpassing the fee paid for Alexander Isak in 2022. He started strongly, scoring five goals in his first 11 games, but his form declined, finishing the season with 11 goals in 51 appearances.

Despite his initial promise, Woltemade struggled in the second half of the season, with only one league goal in 2026. He was often deployed as a midfielder by head coach Eddie Howe, with William Osula preferred as the first-choice frontman. Woltemade's minutes on the pitch diminished, and he expressed frustration at his critics.

Spanish outlet AS reports that Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are among four teams interested in signing Woltemade. However, any deal would require Newcastle to be willing to sell, as he is under contract until 2031. The club's reported asking price of €65m would represent a significant loss, but could allow them to reinvest in a new striker. Woltemade's potential move to Dortmund could be a permanent deal or a loan, offering him a chance to revive his career in his homeland.
