The Top 10 Most Expensive Centre-Midfielders Revealed, as Elliot Anderson's Imminent Manchester City Move is Set to Break the Bank and Top the List

Manchester City are poised to break the world record fee for a centre-midfielder, with a reported deal in place to sign England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for approximately €135 million. This would surpass the current record held by Argentine Enzo Fernández, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for €121m in January 2023.

Anderson, 23, would become the most expensive centre-midfielder in Premier League history and the most expensive British player ever, eclipsing the €117m City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021. The midfielder has been granted permission to undergo a medical in New York on Friday, with the deal subject to the finalisation of personal terms.

The transfer would represent a significant profit for Nottingham Forest, who signed Anderson from Newcastle for €41m in 2023. If completed, the deal would see Anderson join an elite group of high-priced centre-midfielders, including Declan Rice, who has thrived at Arsenal after his €117m move from West Ham, and Moisés Caicedo, who has begun to justify his €116m price tag at Chelsea.

Other notable centre-midfielders who have commanded hefty fees include Paul Pogba, who joined Manchester United from Juventus for €105m in 2016, and Zinédine Zidane, who moved from Juventus to Real Madrid for €78m in 2001. Anderson's current market value stands at €75m, and his impending move to Manchester City is set to redefine the landscape of big-money transfers in the sport.
