Top Army General to Announce Retirement in Abrupt Move, Says Official

A high-profile US Army officer is set to retire, according to a US official, as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth continues to reshape the Pentagon's senior leadership. Gen. Chris Donahue, who has led US Army Europe and Africa for 18 months, is expected to announce his retirement as early as Wednesday.

Donahue's departure comes amid a broader overhaul of the Pentagon's top ranks, with several high-ranking officers being fired or sidelined. The command he currently leads is also being downgraded from a four-star to a three-star post, as part of Hegseth's efforts to reduce the number of generals.

Lt. Gen. Kevin Admiral is expected to be nominated to take over Donahue's role. Donahue, a seasoned officer with extensive combat experience, has commanded the Army's elite Delta Force and the 82nd Airborne Division. He gained wider public attention in 2021 as the last US service member to leave Afghanistan during the withdrawal.
