Uncertainty Surrounds the Future of US-Iran Negotiations as Next Steps Remain Unclear

The United States and Iran are sending conflicting signals about a potential meeting between key negotiators in Qatar, further complicating a peace process aimed at addressing Iran's nuclear program.
The talks, initially scheduled to take place in Switzerland, were revised after a recent exchange of strikes between the two countries over the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a US official and another source, the meeting's venue and agenda changed following the escalation.
While the Trump administration is pushing for direct talks, it remains unclear whether Iranian and American officials will meet face-to-face or communicate through Qatari mediators.
President Trump announced that a meeting would take place in Qatar's capital at Tehran's request, with the US to be represented by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
However, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, said the Iranian delegation's trip to Doha was unrelated to Kushner and Witkoff's visit, and that no negotiation meetings with the US were scheduled.
The Iranian regime's apparent hesitation to resume in-person talks marks a significant step back from previous high-level discussions in Switzerland.
The interim deal between the US and Iran stipulates that Iran should ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days, but Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait.
Recent intelligence reports suggest Tehran will continue to threaten the waterway, giving Iran significant leverage over the global economy.
The memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran calls for a sweeping agreement to be reached within 60 days, with nearly a quarter of that time already expired.
