US Temporarily Lifts Oil Sanctions Against Iran, Citing 'Productive' Talks Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts

President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have highlighted progress in talks with Iran, citing agreements on nuclear inspections and eased tensions. However, Iranian officials have stated that "no new commitments" have been made.

The US has temporarily lifted oil sanctions against Iran, marking a significant shift in policy. The 60-day exemption allows for the purchase of Iranian oil in US dollars, giving Iran greater access to American currency. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent attributed this move to "ongoing productive" talks with Iran in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.

Vice President Vance, who leads the US negotiating team, announced that Iran has agreed to allow UN inspectors to visit its nuclear sites, describing this as "a major milestone" towards ending Iran's nuclear weapons program. President Trump also claimed on social media that Iran will agree to major weapons inspections to ensure "nuclear honesty".

Additionally, new communication lines have been established to de-escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon, where Israel and the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah have eased their attacks. These developments aim to support the delicate cease-fire between the US and Iran.
