USA Suffer Disappointing Defeat to Türkiye Ahead of World Cup Knockout Rounds

The United States fell to a 3-2 defeat against Türkiye on Thursday in Los Angeles, concluding their Group D campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the USMNT already confirmed as Group D winners and Türkiye eliminated, the match was considered a "dead rubber."
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes to his starting lineup, preparing for a Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1.
The USMNT were close to a 2-2 draw, but Türkiye's Kaan Ayhan scored in the 98th minute to secure a win for his team.
Earlier, Sebastian Berhalter scored a stunning equalizer in the 49th minute and set up Auston Trusty's 3rd-minute strike with a precise corner kick.
Türkiye had taken the lead with goals from Arda Güler and Orkun Kökçü in the 10th and 31st minutes, respectively.
Christian Pulisic returned from injury in the 58th minute and forced several strong saves from Türkiye's goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır as the USMNT pushed for a late winner.
