USA Unveils Starting Lineup for Highly-Anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup Opener Against Paraguay
The United States' starting lineup for their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D opener against Paraguay has been announced. Led by head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the team will feature a 3-4-3 formation, with goalkeeper Matt Freese and center back Tim Ream, both from domestic clubs, earning starting spots. Freese will start over Matt Turner, while Ream will wear the captain's armband.
Crystal Palace's Chris Richards, who overcame an ankle injury, will also start, alongside homegrown players Alex Freeman and Tyler Adams. The attack will be led by Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Folarin Balogun.
Paraguay, meanwhile, will start two players with domestic experience: Miguel Almirón and Andrés Cubas, in a 4-4-2 formation. Almirón, one of the team's most experienced players, has scored 10 goals in 76 caps. Diego Gómez, formerly of a domestic club, has recovered from an injury and will start, as will Julio Enciso, who overcame an injury scare in a pre-World Cup friendly. The match is set to take place on Friday at Los Angeles Stadium.
