Vance says nuclear inspectors ‘absolutely’ will return to Iran under terms to end war

Vice President JD Vance announced on Monday that nuclear inspectors will be allowed to return to Iran as part of a deal with the US to end the monthslong war in the Middle East. The agreement includes the destruction of Iran's highly enriched stockpile, with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the US providing assistance.

The details of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be released after a formal signing ceremony on Friday in Switzerland, according to Vance. He confirmed that the implementation of the deal is still being worked out, with input from regional mediators such as Qatar and Pakistan.

Vance expressed hope that nuclear inspections could begin soon, stating that there is broad agreement on the issue. He emphasized that benefits will be provided to Iran if it complies with the terms of the deal and commits to not building a nuclear weapon.

The vice president also addressed concerns over Iran's plans to charge service fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, saying that the deal guarantees toll-free access for 60 days. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described the deal's framework as an important step towards stopping the war and beginning negotiations, but noted that a final agreement has yet to be reached.
