20 Goals in 20 Games - Could Kylian Mbappé Become the Greatest Player in FIFA World Cup History?

Kylian Mbappé is closing in on Lionel Messi's World Cup goalscoring record after scoring for France against Morocco in a 2-0 win. Messi has scored 21 goals in 31 games, but Mbappé is rapidly gaining ground, having scored 20 World Cup goals in just 20 games.

The Frenchman's impressive goal-per-game record dates back to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he scored four goals, including in the final against Croatia. In Qatar four years ago, Mbappé added eight goals to his tally, including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. This summer, he has already scored eight goals, putting him in the running for the Golden Boot alongside Messi.

Mbappé has also demonstrated his ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates, with three assists in the tournament so far, two more than Messi. France is now on track to reach a third consecutive World Cup final, a feat only achieved by Germany and Brazil in the past.

If France succeeds, it could be a stepping stone to greatness for Mbappé, who at 27, is still young enough to compete in at least one, possibly two, more tournaments. With the strength of the current French team, there is a good chance Mbappé could equal Pelé's record of three World Cup wins and become the top goalscorer in World Cup history, cementing his status as the greatest World Cup player of all time.
