Iran Launches Attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain in Retaliation to Latest US Strikes

The US has carried out airstrikes against Iran in response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump had announced "major combat operations" against Iran on February 28, with joint US-Israeli strikes targeting military and government sites.

Despite ongoing peace talks and a signed memorandum of understanding, the US and Iran exchanged limited strikes in late June. Iran's military launched attacks on 85 US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain on Wednesday, claiming they were retaliatory strikes.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted Bandar Salman, the Fifth Naval District in Bahrain, and Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait. Bahrain's Interior Ministry activated air raid sirens, urging citizens to remain calm and seek safe shelter.

Iran also claimed to have destroyed a drone that intended to interfere with the operation. Lead Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the US of "major MOU violations" after US airstrikes on Tuesday, citing violations such as "persistent threats of further strikes" and "reinstating oil sanctions".

The US said the retaliatory airstrikes targeted Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, and anti-ship missile capabilities. US Central Command described the strikes as "offensive" and aimed at degrading Iran's ability to attack international commerce in the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent strikes targeted port facilities, missile and drone sites, coastal surveillance sites, and air defense sites, according to US officials. The action is seen as a significant escalation, with the US stating that its forces "remain postured and prepared to hold Iran accountable" for any violations of the agreement.
