France has advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Saturday. Kylian Mbappe scored the decisive penalty in the 70th minute, converting from the spot after Desire Doue was brought down in the area by Diego Gomez.

The South American side had previously upset Germany and proved to be stubborn opponents for the tournament favourites. France's forward line, however, struggled to create chances, with Mbappe's penalty being the breakthrough they needed.

Gustavo Alfaro's side attempted to push forward in the final 20 minutes but failed to threaten an equaliser. France will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals, with manager Didier Deschamps likely to be relieved to have navigated a potential upset.

The French team's performance was not without its criticisms, with some players struggling to make an impact. Mbappe, however, was back among the goals and is now level with Lionel Messi on seven goals in the race for the Golden Boot.

Deschamps will be looking for an improved performance from his team against Morocco, with some players underperforming against Paraguay. The French manager may also consider making better use of his bench in future matches.
