France Edge Out Paraguay in Thrilling Encounter to Seal Quarter-Finals Berth

France have edged past Paraguay in a tightly contested match at the Lincoln Financial Field, setting up a quarter-final tie against Morocco in the FIFA World Cup.

Paraguay, who made history by becoming the first team to beat Germany on penalties in a World Cup fixture, employed a defensive strategy to stifle France's attacking prowess. The South American side's organisation, hard work, and determined tackling frustrated France during a heated first half, with the two-time World Cup winners failing to register a single shot on target.

Despite dominating possession, France were limited to just five shots at goal in the opening period, with Paraguay's Julio Enciso proving to be a constant thorn in their side. The match became only the third World Cup knockout game since 1966 not to feature a shot on target in the first half.

The introduction of Desire Doue in the second half proved pivotal, as he was brought down in the box by Diego Gomez, allowing Kylian Mbappe to score the decisive penalty. France then adopted a more defensive approach, committing tactical fouls and wasting time to secure their narrow lead.

Mbappe could have doubled France's advantage in stoppage time, but for an excellent double save from Paraguay's goalkeeper Orlando Gill. The win marks France's sternest test yet in the tournament, with a tougher challenge expected against Morocco on Thursday. William Saliba was named the Man of the Match for his impressive performance.
