Kylian Mbappe Stars as France Secures Thrilling Victory Over Morocco

BOSTON — Moroccan fans' hopes were briefly raised on Thursday after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou stopped a Kylian Mbappe penalty and made another impressive save. However, France's attack eventually broke through, securing a 2-0 victory in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Mbappe made up for his penalty miss with a curling shot from distance that Bounou couldn't stop. Ousmane Dembele followed up with a solo effort six minutes later, sealing the win that sends France to the World Cup semifinals for the third consecutive tournament.

France will face the winner of the Spain-Belgium quarterfinal on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas. Morocco, who were without injured star striker Ismael Saibari, struggled to contain France's multi-faceted attack. Les Bleus created numerous chances, with 22 shots in total, and eventually found the breakthrough in the 60th minute through Mbappe.

Dembele's goal was assisted by Mbappe, who laid the ball off to his teammate as they ran at Morocco's defense. Morocco's attack, meanwhile, managed just a single shot on goal and five shots in total, leaving France goalkeeper Mike Maignan untested.

The loss marks a disappointing end to Morocco's World Cup campaign, but the team showed promising signs throughout the tournament, particularly in matches against Brazil and the Netherlands. France, on the other hand, faces a tougher test in the semifinals, potentially against Spain, who have yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
