Maine Senate Debate Goes Viral After Transgender Candidate Delivers Powerful Response to Simple Yet Profound Question

A moment from Senate candidate Ashley Webb sparked online mockery during a Maine Senate debate on Thursday night. Webb, who is transgender, highlighted being a songwriter as a qualification for Senate, saying, "I'm a songwriter and then I write my own books." This was in response to a question about qualifications to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Webb also emphasized transparency, stating, "I wouldn't lie to people and I wouldn't deceive the people." The moment went viral on social media, with many conservatives mocking Webb's list of qualifications.

The debate was held to determine who will replace former Democratic nominee Graham Platner. Eight candidates participated, including Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson.

The winner of the Maine Democratic Party convention on July 25 will face off against GOP Sen. Susan Collins in the midterm elections. This high-stakes race is one of roughly a dozen that will determine if Republicans hold their slim Senate majority. A total of 12 Democrats are vying to replace Platner.
