Man Killed by Federal Agent in Houston Was Not the Target of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Search

Federal immigration agents shot and killed a man in Houston on Tuesday during a traffic stop, after mistaking him for a suspect they were seeking. The agents had been searching for two Guatemalan immigrants, and believed one of them was in a white van being driven by Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant. However, the Guatemalans were not in the van, and Mr. Araujo, who had lived in the US without authorization for 35 years, was on his way to work with three other men.

The encounter escalated quickly, and an agent shot Mr. Araujo in the abdomen, resulting in his death at a hospital hours later. According to Homeland Security officials, Mr. Araujo attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon, but no evidence has emerged to support this claim. The agents had been surveilling an address connected to one of the Guatemalan targets for weeks and had seen two white vans at the property, prompting them to initiate the traffic stop when they spotted a similar van on Tuesday.
