Maxence Lacroix Discusses Progression as Chelsea's Defensive Spending Spree is Set to Surpass €500m Mark

Chelsea are leading the spending among Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window, having already signed Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra for €57 million. The 21-year-old is now the joint-fifth most expensive right-back in the sport's history.

The club's investments in their back line are set to continue, with a pursuit of Crystal Palace star Maxence Lacroix underway. Despite interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, Chelsea appear to be in pole position to sign the French defender. Palace are reportedly seeking at least €64.7m for the central defender.

Since 2022, Chelsea have spent a staggering €466m on defenders, with Lacroix's potential deal set to take them past the €500m mark. This exceeds the spending of Manchester City by €80m and is nearly twice that of Paris Saint-Germain over the last four seasons.

Chelsea's defender spending has been inconsistent, with €256m spent in the 2022/23 season, followed by significantly lower sums in subsequent seasons. However, reports suggest the club will surpass the €100m mark for new defenders this season, hoping to bring more success than previous signings.
