Mourners Chant ‘Revenge’ at Funeral Prayers for Iran’s Slain Supreme Leader Amid Outpouring of Grief and Anger

Tens of thousands of mourners, including senior Iranian officials, gathered in Tehran for funeral prayers for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in February. The crowds chanted calls for revenge as they packed the Grand Mosalla mosque complex.

Among those in attendance were the brothers of the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, but he himself has not been seen in public since succeeding his father. The head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ahmad Vahidi, also attended the prayers, briefly greeting mourners before being whisked away by security personnel.

The absence of Mojtaba Khamenei has raised questions about his health and the country's internal political dynamics, particularly at a time of heightened regional tension. Mourners began arriving at the mosque before dawn, carrying photographs of Ayatollah Khamenei and holding banners calling for his death to be avenged. The large crowd overflowed the mosque, with many praying outside in the heat of the day.
