Niklas Süle Shocks Football World by Coming Out of Retirement to Sign with Eighth-Tier German Club
Former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund centre-back Niklas Süle has announced a surprise decision to come out of retirement and play in the eighth tier of German football at the age of 30. Süle, who retired from professional football at the end of the 2025/26 season with a market value of €4 million, will now play for SV Tiefenbach in Baden-Württemberg.
A knee injury sustained during a 1-2 defeat at Hoffenheim on April 18 prompted Süle's initial decision to retire. Although initial fears of a third cruciate ligament tear were alleviated, Süle opted to hang up his boots, citing the prospect of another lengthy injury layoff as a major factor. He had previously suffered cruciate ligament tears in 2014 and 2019, missing 27 matches on each occasion.
Süle's career has been marked by significant success, including five Bundesliga titles, the Champions League in 2020, two DFB-Pokal titles, and the Club World Cup in 2021, all won during his time with Bayern Munich. He made a total of 171 appearances for Bayern, 110 for Dortmund, and 117 for his youth club TSG Hoffenheim. Despite his injuries and decreased playing time, Süle remains a towering figure in German football.
