The White House Entrance Undergoes Significant Security Enhancements and Upgrades

Security enhancements are underway at the White House, specifically at the North Portico, according to a White House official. The work, expected to be completed by mid-September, aims to upgrade security measures at the entrance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The project is currently covered by large tarps that mimic the existing portico, complete with printed columns and a lamp. This comes as separate restoration work is being done on the front face of the White House, which includes scaffolding around the columns near the front door.

Additionally, the Trump administration has proposed a plan to fence off Lafayette Park and possibly Pennsylvania Avenue, citing security risks. The plan, submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts, suggests discreet fencing, monitoring systems, and alarms that would preserve day-to-day openness while allowing for temporary closures when necessary. The proposal will be discussed at a meeting on July 16.

The administration has also undertaken other projects around the White House, including the construction of a granite helipad on the South Lawn for Marine One and the creation of a patio in the Rose Garden. Other changes include the installation of flagpoles on the North and South lawns and plaques underneath presidential portraits along the West Wing Colonnade. Some of these projects have faced opposition, including a lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to block the construction of a White House ballroom.
