Confederate Flag Display Removed at State Fair Amid Ongoing Debate Over Racial Symbolism and Southern Heritage

A Confederate flag displayed on a video screen at the North Carolina booth at the Great American State Fair on the National Mall has been removed. The flag appeared alongside the current North Carolina state flag on a split-screen display, gaining attention after a reporter highlighted it on social media.

The North Carolina booth is part of the Great American State Fair, an event celebrating the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary. The fair is organized by Freedom 250, a nonprofit aligned with former President Donald Trump.

A spokesperson for North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein confirmed the removal of the video display, stating it did not represent the state. The governor's office said a team member spoke with event organizers, resulting in the removal of the offending part of the display.

The governor's spokesperson emphasized that the display did not reflect the values of North Carolina, adding that a state celebration on July 4 in Raleigh will honor the spirit of equality and freedom.

North Carolina's official state flag has never featured Confederate symbols. The state declined to sponsor a booth at the fair due to costs, but local companies stepped in to support the pavilion.

However, the sponsorship has been contentious, with some lawmakers alleging the governor manufactured a crisis over funding. A representative from Freedom 250 said the display was unintentionally included and removed once state representatives saw it.

A volunteer organizer of the North Carolina pavilion, Lorie Khatod, said local residents "stepped up" to support the exhibit after learning there would be no official state representation. Khatod added that the unapproved image was immediately removed, and the focus remains on celebrating America's 250th birthday.

One of the sponsoring businesses, Mt. Olive Pickle Company, has withdrawn its participation in the exhibit, citing values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom. The company said it was unaware of the Confederate flag's inclusion in the video display.
