Aurelien Tchouameni Benched for France's 2026 World Cup Clash Against Iraq: What's Behind the Surprise Decision

France midfielder Aurelién Tchouaméni has been left out of the starting lineup for the team's second Group I match at the 2026 World Cup against Iraq. Tchouaméni, who played the full 90 minutes in France's 3-1 win over Senegal, was not included in the squad due to an undisclosed knock. He was unable to train with his teammates ahead of the game.

AS Roma's Manu Koné has replaced Tchouaméni in the lineup, partnering Adrien Rabiot in midfield. France manager Didier Deschamps has downplayed concerns over Tchouaméni's injury, suggesting it may be a precautionary measure. "At first glance, there's no cause for concern," Deschamps said.

Deschamps attributed Tchouaméni's absence to squad rotation, stating, "Not all the players can play every match." The manager has a deep squad, with N'Golo Kanté and Warren Zaïre-Emery available to deputize in midfield.

Other changes to the lineup include Lucas Digne replacing Théo Hernandez at left back and Bradley Barcola starting over Desiré Doué in attack. William Saliba, who has been playing through pain, retained his place in defense alongside Dayot Upamecano.

A win over Iraq would confirm France's passage to the knockout stages, with their final group position to be decided by the match against Norway on Friday. If France tops the group, they will face one of the best third-placed teams in the last 32.
